WirelessWhere is the Downeast.Net Wi-Fi network available? Our Wi-Fi signal is available in the downtown area of Ellsworth. You can pick up our signal throughout most of the Ellsworth Public Library, in the parking lot in front of City Hall, and all of the outside grassy areas from Hancock county courthouse toward Main Street. Our signal is also newly extended up and down Main Street, from the Seagull Cafe by the bridge, up as far as the High Street intersection. The ability of your Wi-Fi device to pick up our signal at the outermost reaches of our hotspot area is limited by the strength of your antenna, but those are our current signal boundaries. How do I access the Wi-Fi network? The first step is to sign up for Wi-Fi access. If you have a dial-up or broadband service through Downeast.Net, you get 10 hours of our Wi-Fi service free each month, but you must inform us that you wish to use it. If you have no paid services through Downeast.Net, our package is $10 for 10 hours. You may use the 10 hours whenever you like. They do not need to be used all at once. You will need a laptop (notebook) with built-in wireless capacity, or one that has a Wi-Fi card installed. You will need to check the information that accompanies your wireless card to see how to add a new wireless connection or service, as the steps vary according to what operating system your computer is running, the manufacturer of your Wi-Fi card, etc. Some handheld devices may by able to login as well (see note about Java, below). General Settings
Our login screen will usually work best in Internet Explorer, although you may be successful using any Java-enabled browser. Once you have logged in, you're free to use any web browser you wish to use. Tip: You may wish to leave the small logged-in window open but minimized during your online session, and maximize it to use when you logout, because it keeps track of the duration of your session. It is not cumulative over multiple sessions, but it helps to give you an idea of how much time you've used. |
